THE PROJECT

The ‘AWAVES’ project was launched with the aim of identifying, documenting, protecting and disseminating the maritime cultural heritage of the Atlantic area, particularly the less visible or intangible heritage that forms part of the collective memory of coastal communities.

Furthermore, it embraces an innovative vision of the Atlantic maritime culture, combining digital technologies, immersive experiences and participatory methodologies to create new ways of connecting heritage, citizens and sustainable tourism.

Through cooperation among organisations in Spain, Portugal, France and Ireland, 'AWAVES' promotes the exchange of knowledge, the development of innovative tools and the implementation of pilot actions that contribute to promote the maritime heritage as a cultural, social and tourism resource.

'AWAVES' develops a common cooperation strategy aimed at:

  • Protecting and enhancing Atlantic maritime cultural heritage.
  • Promoting models of sustainable cultural tourism linked to Atlantic identity.
  • Developing innovative digital tools to document and disseminating said heritage.
  • Encouraging citizen participation and intergenerational transmission of knowledge.
  • Reinforcing cooperation between Atlantic European territories.
